Strategic Overview
Context
Aditya Birla Capital (ABC) is one of India’s largest financial conglomerates. Its Mutual Fund arm (ABSLMF) serves millions of investors. To expand into the vast retail investor market and acquire first-time investors, a completely digital, regulatory-compliant onboarding system was required.
The Baseline Problem
Despite high brand authority, the legacy KYC process was paperwork-heavy, fragmented, and required mandatory offline elements. This legacy flow created a massive barrier to entry, resulting in a 65%+ drop-off rate during the manual KYC stages.
Strategic Objectives & Product Vision
To align ABSLMF's brand promise with corporate acquisition strategies, I established three primary product design objectives derived from the high-level business goals:
-
Transform Regulatory Chaos into Guided Clarity (User Goal): Reframe the daunting e-KYC journey into a simple, progress-tracked, multi-step digital flow.
Business Impact: Drastically reduce user drop-offs and abandonments.
-
Eliminate Operational Dependency (Business Goal): Replace manual document upload/verification with automated workflows using DigiLocker, real-time Video IPV, and digital e-Signs.
Operational Impact: Lower operational overhead and data accuracy issues.
-
Become "Investment-Ready" in <10 Minutes (Process Goal): Engineer a process velocity that enables a new user to complete KYC and immediately execute their first trade within a single session.
Strategic Impact: Position ABSLMF as the most accessible gateway for first-time retail investors.

User Personas & Behavioral Psychology
Primary Persona: Rohan, The Novice Investor
-
Profile & Archetype: 28-year-old Digital Marketer, first-time retail mutual fund investor.
-
Tech Literacy: High (frequently uses UPI apps, quick-commerce, and mobile banking).
-
Psychological Mindset & Anxiety Triggers: Highly motivated to start investing, but deeply cautious about regulatory jargon, long forms, and uploading sensitive personal identity documents online.

Applied UX Psychology Frameworks
-
Hick's Law & Progressive Disclosure (Preventing Form Anxiety):
-
Problem: Presenting a traditional 20-field financial compliance form on a single screen causes immediate cognitive fatigue and high abandonment.
-
UX Solution: Complex regulatory checks are chunked into 4 bite-sized, sequential steps (PAN ➔ DigiLocker ➔ Video IPV ➔ E-Sign). Users only make one binary decision at a time, keeping cognitive load to a minimum.
-
-
System Status & Feedback Loops (Video IPV Confidence Building):
-
Problem: Video In-Person Verification (IPV) is the single highest drop-off point in digital KYC because users fear failing compliance or submitting a bad photo.
-
UX Solution: An active facial oval mask provides real-time visual cues (“Hold Still,” “Position Face in Frame,” “Lighting Good”). Turning a cold regulatory requirement into an interactive, self-correcting selfie moment eliminates submission anxiety.
-
-
Fitts's Law & Goal-Gradient Effect (Accelerating Completion):
-
Problem: Small, hard-to-tap CTA buttons and unclear progress metrics cause friction as users near the final steps.
-
UX Solution: Primary actions (e.g., "E-Verify via DigiLocker" or "Sign via Aadhaar OTP") are styled as full-width sticky bottom-sheets within natural thumb reach. A persistent top progress bar (25% ➔ 50% ➔ 75% ➔ 100%) leverages the Goal-Gradient Effect, encouraging users to finish as they get closer to becoming "Investment-Ready."
-
Information Architecture (IA)
Rather than structuring the portal as a passive linear form, the Information Architecture was engineered as a Conversion & RegTech Pipeline. Every node in the architecture directly maps to your strategic business goals, eliminating friction points that previously triggered drop-offs while automating compliance.
IA Pillar-to-Business Goal Alignment
-
Pillar 1: PAN & NSDL Instant Verification
Target Business Goals: Ensure Regulatory Compliance & Expand User Acquisition for First-Time Investors.
IA Rationale: By validating the PAN via real-time NSDL API calls upfront, the system instantly pre-fills official names and DOB. First-time investors avoid typing tedious personal details, removing friction at minute one.
-
Pillar 2: DigiLocker Automated Document Pull
Target Business Goal: Lower Operational Overhead & Manual Intervention.
IA Rationale: Replacing photo uploads with a single Aadhaar-authenticated DigiLocker fetch automates 100% of address and photo verification. It removes manual back-office review costs and eliminates image quality rejection errors.
-
Pillar 3: Guided Video IPV (In-Person Verification)
Target Business Goal: Reduce User Drop-Offs & Ensure Regulatory Compliance.
IA Rationale: Video IPV is traditionally a high-abandonment step. Placing it as step three—after identity is already verified—builds momentum. Interactive overlay masks guide users in real-time ("Align Face," "Lighting Good"), preventing compliance rejections and drop-offs.
-
Pillar 4: Aadhaar OTP E-Sign & Instant Unlocking
Target Business Goals: Increase Onboarding Conversion Rates & Accelerate Time-to-Investment (<10 Mins).
IA Rationale: The final contract signature uses a 1-tap Aadhaar OTP SDK. Upon verification, the portal immediately unlocks the mutual fund catalog and UPI payment gateway, converting a registered user into an active investor within the same session.

Wireframing & Low-Fidelity Iterations
The High-Friction Testing Pivot
Initial paper prototypes featured complex manual document uploads for PAN, Address Proof, and Canceled Checks, mimicking the physical form. User testing revealed this caused 75% drop-offs due to friction with camera permissions, file size errors, and document naming confusion.
The Pivot: Automation-First DigiLocker Flow
I pivoted the entire strategy to an Automation-First approach. Manual upload was demoted to a secondary failure fallback. Users are now guided directly to DigiLocker and Aadhaar E-Verify. This eliminated document uploads entirely, ensuring KRA-ready data accuracy and process speed.

High-Fidelity UI & Core Feature Breakdown

Zero-Friction PAN & Bank Integration
NSDL Automated Validation: Uses only a user’s PAN and DOB to instantly fetch and verify official details, pre-filling the registration form with 100% accurate compliance data.
Guided real-time Video IPV Verification
Compliant selfie-video validation: The screen features a dynamic oval guiding mask with real-time feedback (e.g., “Align your face,” “Too dark,” “Hold still”). This guides users through a complex compliance requirement (Real-time Geo-tagged Video IPV) with zero operational anxiety.
Integrated Aadhaar E-Sign SDK
1-Tap compliance validation: The entire legal KYC document is rendered within a native mobile wrapper. Users complete the formal regulatory signature using their Aadhaar-linked OTP, eliminating the need to print, sign, scan, or email.
Design System & Scalability
To maintain brand consistency across the ABC conglomerate and ensure engineering velocity, I architected the ABSLMF ONE Design System:
-
Adaptive KRA Spacing Tokens: Custom-designed space tokens specifically optimized to reduce cognitive overload in regulatory forms, mapped to Flutter and React variables.
-
Modular Financial Components: A reusable library of 40+ UI components (status steppers, compliance check-boxes, regulatory document viewers) with unified dark/light mode variants.
-
Handoff Velocity Impact (AI-Extrapolated): Reduced implementation cycle times by 35%, eliminating UI inconsistency across the Android and iOS builds.
