Strategic Overview
Context
mPokket is one of India's pioneering micro-lending platforms, delivering instant pocket loans to college students and young salaried professionals who lack traditional credit histories. Operating in a high-velocity mobile-first ecosystem, the platform serves as the initial gateway to formal credit for millions of young adults.
The Baseline Problem
Despite strong product-market fit, the legacy application flow suffered from severe verification friction. Manual student ID/salary slip uploads, opaque fee breakdowns, and fragmented repayment channels led to a 58% drop-off rate during onboarding and high involuntary default rates caused by confusing payment schedules.
Strategic Objectives & Product Vision
To align mPokket’s brand promise with corporate financial targets, I established three core product design objectives derived directly from the strategic business goals:

Achieve <5-Minute Disbursal Velocity (Process Goal): Transform the multi-step verification flow into an automated, camera-guided OCR and e-KYC journey that dispatches funds directly to the user’s bank account in a single session.

Problem: Requiring student ID, PAN, selfie, and bank statements on a single screen causes immediate cognitive overload and app abandonment.
UX Solution: Verification is chunked into 3 progressive, single-action steps using camera-guided smart OCR. Data is automatically extracted from ID cards, reducing typing effort to zero.

Problem: Asking users for app reviews or referrals during onboarding creates friction and yields low conversion.
UX Solution: The referral trigger is timed precisely at the "Peak Delight" moment—immediately after funds hit the user's bank account. A celebratory micro-interaction introduces a 1-tap WhatsApp referral card, turning satisfied borrowers into campus advocates.

UX Solution: The active loan card features a visual progress bar showing credit score improvements and limit upgrades upon repayment. A full-width sticky "Pay Now via UPI" button is positioned in the primary thumb zone, enabling 1-tap settlement.
Information Architecture (IA)
The Information Architecture was re-engineered from a rigid, multi-screen form into an Automated Micro-Lending Funnel. Each pillar directly resolves a specific friction point in the user journey, mapping back to core business targets.

Wireframing & Low-Fidelity Iterations
The High-Friction Testing Pivot
During early usability testing on college campuses, the initial prototype required users to manually upload PDF documents for income proof and college enrollment. Testing showed an alarming 64% failure rate, primarily driven by file format errors, missing document pages, and incorrect file compression on low-cost smartphones.
The Pivot: Smart Camera OCR Scanner
I shifted the design strategy from file uploads to a Camera-Guided Smart Scanner. The app now provides an active rectangular frame with automatic edge detection and glare suppression. As soon as the student aligns their ID card or bank statement inside the viewport, OCR technology extracts the relevant text fields instantly, reducing verification time from minutes to seconds.
